The Duke of Newcastle, William Cavendish, was an English courtier and supporter of the arts. He was a renowned horse breeder, as well as being patron to playwright Ben Jonson and the intellectual group known as the Welbeck Circle.
His memoirs are written by his wife, Margaret Cavendish, the Duchess of Newcastle. She was a philosopher, poet, scientist, fiction writer and playwright, who published over 12 original texts at a time when women were largely removed from publishing.
Her works, specifically The Blazing World, contribute to Margaret being credited alongside Mary Shelley as a pioneer for the invention of science fiction and engaged with some of the most influential minds of her time.
