The very scarce first edition, first impression.

Illustrated with two photogravure portraits and sixteen further plates, with an additional image tipped in to the front free endpaper. Collated, complete.

A fascinating and detailed biography of John, a pioneer evangelist with the London Missionary Society. He arrived in Shanghai in 1855, and remained there for 55 years, chiefly in Hubei and Hunan.

He was among the first to begin Christian missionary work in the provinces of Hubei, Hunan, and Sichuan. 

John published a Classical Chinese New Testament in 1885, and a Mandarin New Testament in 1889.

Condition

In the publisher's original cloth binding. Bump to back strip head, with some fading to back strip. Boards bright. Image tipped in to front free endpaper. Significant spotting to text block fore edge. Internally, firmly bound. Spotting to first and last few leaves, with pages otherwise clean and bright.
