Lubbock was an English banker, Liberal politician, philanthropist, scientist and polymath. While working in his family company as a banker, Lubbock made significant contributions in archaeology, ethnography, and several branches of biology. He also coined the terms 'Paleolithic' and 'Neolithic' to denote the Old and New Stone Ages, respectively. He helped establish archaeology as a scientific discipline, and was influential in debates concerning evolutionary theory.
This work is the publication of a series of talks given by Lubbock at various school and college occasions over the course of his life. Chapters have titles such as 'The Blessings of Friends', 'The Beauties of Nature', 'Poetry', 'Art', and 'Labour and Rest'.

Condition
In a crushed half morocco binding, with gilt detailing to back strip, and cloth covered boards. Externally, excellent, with a touch of rubbing to back strip head, and head of front joint. Bookplate to verso of front free endpaper. Internally, firmly bound. Light spotting to volume I title page, with pages otherwise clean and bright.
