A social novel set in Yorkshire in 1811 to 1812, during the industrial depression resulting from the Napoleonic Wars and the War of 1812. The novel is set against the backdrop of the Luddite uprisings in the Yorkshire textile industry, and follows Robert Moore, a mill owner noted for apparent ruthlessness towards his employees. Villette, 1905. After an unspecified family disaster, the protagonist Lucy Snowe travels from her native England to the fictional Continental city of Villette to teach at a girls' school, where she is drawn into adventure and romance. Written by Charlotte Nicholls, commonly known as Charlotte Bronte, an English novelist and poet, the eldest of the three Bronte sisters whose novels became classics of English literature. She is best known for her novel Jane Eyre which is widely held in high regard in the gothic fiction genre of literature.

Condition

Bound in quarter vellum with cloth covered boards. Externally, smart with light wear to the extremities and minor discolouration to the vellum as is typical with ageing. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright with minor age toning to the extremities. Scattered spotting to the endpapers with a contemporary ink inscription to the front endpaper. Bookseller's label to the front pastedown.
