The scarce first edition thus of this work, the first edition to be printed under this title; the same work was published in 1897 under the title 'Two Old Ladies, Two Foolish Fairies and a Tom Cat', and is famous for being the first book to feature colour illustrations from Arthur Rackham.
This edition is brightly illustrated by Arthur Rackham, one of the leading figures of the Golden Age of British book illustration. With four colour plates from Rackham, and nineteen further illustrations, both vignette and full plate. Collated, complete.

With eight pages of contemporary advertisements to the rear.

In the publisher's original pictorial cloth binding. Bumping to spine head and tail, with discolouration to back strip. Front joint starting, with board holding firm. Internally, firmly bound. Pages clean and bright.
