A sentimental novel, and female bildungsroman this was the first novel from American author Maria Susanna Cummins, and was an immediate best-seller, selling 20,000 copies in twenty days.

The narrative follows the story of Gertrude Flint, an orphan rescued at the age of eight by Trueman Flint, a lamplighter, from her abusive guardian, Nan Grant.



Condition

In the original decorative cloth binding. Externally, smart, with rubbing and bumping to the extremities. Marks to the boards. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are age toned, with light spotting to the endpapers, otherwise generally clean. Contemporary ink inscription to the front free endpaper.
