First edition. Illustrated with a frontispiece, forty-nine plates, twenty-five in-text images, and two folding maps to the rear. Collated complete. A rich exploration of the history and significance of the famous pilgrimage to Canterbury, England. With discussions on important aspects of the pilgrimage, including its origins, the different routes taken, the religious and cultural significance of the journey, and the various landmarks and monuments along the way. Ward also provides an in-depth look at the people who undertook the pilgrimage, including their motivations, experiences, and the impact that the journey had on their lives. Written by Henry Snowden Ward, an English photographer and author. Illustrated by Catharine Weed Barnes Ward, an early American photographer who later lived in England, and was a strong supporter of women photographers. As a married couple, the pair often worked in collaboration to produce periodicals and textbooks about photography as well as illustrated works of literature.
Condition
Bound in full calf. Externally, sound with rubbing to the extremities and fading to the spine. The odd mark to the boards with minor discolouration to the board edges. Spine label peeling slightly with a small crack to the front joint. Hinges just starting but firm. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright with the odd small spot. Light age toning to the extremities and endpapers with a school prize bookplate to the front pastedown.
