The first UK edition of this work, complete in two volumes. Preceded by the US edition of 1901. Account of William Makepeace Thackeray's visits to America in 1852 and 1855, previously appeared in the Century Magazine in 1901 and 1902, also included in the Cornhill Magazine. With letters to American friends and papers on 'The Virginians', also including a record of a variety of Thackerayana, and a bibliography by Frederick S.
Compiled by James Grant Wilson, American editor known founder of the Chicago Record, colonel in the Union Army during the American Civil War.
Featuring numerous illustrations in text as well as full page plates of black and white illustrations, and publisher's advertisements to the rear.
Condition
In the original publisher's full cloth binding. Externally very smart with minor shelf wear, minor bumping to head and tail of spine and extremities, backstrip darkened. Ink gift inscription to front free endpapers dated 1909. Internally, firmly bound. Light spotting to fore edge, affecting only endpapers and occasional leaf marginally, otherwise pages generally bright and clean. Occasional leaf unopened. With numerous in-text illustrations as well as full page plates.
