A souvenir edition commemorating Tennyson’s historical drama Becket, first performed in 1893, staged at the Lyceum Theatre.
This volume contains the Dramatis Personae for the Drury Lane Theatre season of 1905, a synopsis of scenery by Joseph Harker, and twelve lithographed plates of portraits and stage scenes. Collated and complete.
Henry Irving, among the most celebrated actors of the Victorian stage, became the first actor to receive a knighthood in 1895. He died on 13 October 1905, succumbing to a stroke shortly after leaving the stage from a performance of Becket.
Condition
In the publisher's original quarter cloth binding with pictorial paper covered boards. Boards rubbed and faded. The off slight handling mark and scratch to boards. Slight rubbing and bumping to extremities. Slight soiling to paper boards. Slight cockling front and rear paste downs. Endpapers slightly soiled with one or two slight handling marks. Front hinge very slightly cracked. Internally, fully disbound from the dramatis personae to the final plate. Slight tearing to gutters whree internal pages have been disbound from staple binding. Pages generally bright and clean, with slight age toning and handling mark to fore edge. Very slight cockling to fore edge.
