The very scarce first edition, first impression of this work.

Illustrated with two folding maps, a frontispiece, and fifteen plates. Collated, complete.

Lady Susan's account of her years in China provide a fascinating account of the Chinese royal court as ruled by the Dowager Empress. She also discusses Taoism, Buddhism, Confucianism, and the Chinese language, with a discussion of Chinese history.

Rebound, with endpapers renewed. Lacking front free endpaper and half title.

Condition

Rebound in cloth, with endpapers renewed, and front free endpaper removed. Fading to back strip, with bump to back strip head. Light handling marks to boards. Front hinge strained and somewhat tender. Lacking half title. Internally, firmly bound. Pages clean and bright, with only the odd spot. Small closed tear to head of first five leaves, not affecting text. Major closed tear to one folding map, with one panel detached but present.
