The first edition. 

Illustrated with a monochrome photographed frontispiece and sixteen monochrome illustrations, including monochrome vignettes, a folding colour map, and monochrome photographic plates. Collated, complete.

Presented by William Hesketh Lever, an English industrialist, philanthropist and politician, to 'Col G. J. French'. The work was presented for the opening of Lever Park, a Landscape park in Rivington donated by William Lever. 

This work also includes a folded illustration by Thomas Raffles Davison depicting an old barn at Rivington which was restored by W. H. Lever, with a relevant newspaper article about the illustration. The illustration was taken from the 'The British Architect' periodical. 

William Fergusson Irvine's account of the history of Rivington, a village and Civil Parish in Lancashire in England. The work discusses the history of the manor, the Rivington Church, Grammar School and the chapel, and covers the old houses and families, reservoirs and more.

Condition

In the publisher's original cloth with a crushed morocco spine label. Externally, cockling to the boards, heaviest to the front, marks to the boards, and closed tears to the front joint, and very minimal edge wear. Chipping to the spine label. Owner's signature to the front pastedown, with offsetting to the endpapers. Internally firmly bound with clean and bright pages.
