1904-1908 The Dynasts, A Drama of the Napoleonic Wars in Three Parts, Nineteen Acts, & One Hundred and Thirty Scenes
What Our Customers Say...
Description
First Edition, Publishers' Original Binding
Volume I is a first edition, second issue, with '1904' to the title page, rather than 1903.
Volume II is a first edition, second state, with the verso of the title page blank. The two states of this volume is due to a late decision not to create an American edition, resulting in the removal of the 'copyright in the United States of America' notice to the verso of the title page. Purdy notes 'there can be no question of "issue" [... as] the cancellation took place not only before publication but apparently while the book was still in sheets at the printers'.
Volume III is a first edition, first issue.
The complete three volume first edition of Thomas Hardy's closet drama, described by the author as 'the longest English drama in existence'.
With a single leaf of publisher's advertisements to the rear of volumes I and II.
George Orwell decreed that Hardy had 'set free his genius' in this drama.
