The novel follows Tom, a young chimney sweep, who falls into a river and is transformed into a water-baby. Written by Charles Kingsley, a broad church priest of the Church of England, a university professor, social reformer, historian, novelist and poet. Kingsley was a friend and correspondent of Charles Darwin, writing this novel partly in satire of 'In Origin of Species'. Illustrated by Edward Linley Sambourne, an English cartoonist and illustrator most famous for being a draughtsman at Punch for more than forty years and rising to the position of "First Cartoonist" in his final decade.
