Sterne's work is a humorous and philosophical investigation into the connection between literature and life. A fictional autobiography, this work is also an experiment in the form and structure of printed narratives. Sterne played an important part in the rise of the novel, alongside contemporaries Daniel Defoe and Samuel Richardson.
With a frontispiece to each volume, three plates to volume I, and three to volume II.

Illustrated by British illustrator Harry Furniss, noted for his illustrations for Lewis Carroll's novel 'Sylvie and Bruno'.
In signed Zaehnsdorf bindings.
Condition
In full calf signed bindings, with extensive gilt detailing to back strips, and gilt dentelles. Externally, excellent, with just a touch of rubbing to front joint heads. Light fading to back strip, as is common with calf of this shade. Internally, firmly bound. Pages a touch age toned due to paper type, with the odd instance of spotting, most concentrated to volume I.
