This work is part of a series of skazki, fairy tales, commissioned by the Tsari government in 1899, which helped to launch Ivan Bilibin's career.
'Marya Morevna', or 'The Death of Koschei the Deathless', is a Russian fairy tale about an evil immortal man named Koschei, who mances young women with his magic.
Koshchei is an archetypal male antagonist in Russian folklore. In this tale, he is discovered chained in the dudgeon of a beautiful warrior princess, and, once released, terrorised those around him.
This tale was originally by Alexander Afanasyev, who published nearly six hundred fairy and folk tales during his life. He is considered to be the Russian counterpart to the Brothers Grimm.
Illustrated in colour throughout by Ivan Bilibin, who took part in the mir iskusstva.
Collated, complete.
