A lovely first edition copy, bound in original deep blue cloth.
Featuring a striking gilt pictorial motif to front board, reminiscent of a tile mosaic, and a gilt top edge.
Gautier's many travel titles are widely considered to be some of the most personable travel works of the 19th Century.
Within, he documents his travels, predominantly across the north of Italy, originally published in the French, later translated by Daniel B. Vermilye, of which this is a first edition.
Features a monochrome frontispiece, and 26 further monochrome plates.
Collated, complete.
The plate belonging to p.25 is loose, and slotted inside.
Condition
Bound in original blue cloth. Externally, in lovely condition. Front hinge starting. Rubbing to extremities. The odd mark to boards. Age toning to endpapers. Internally, overall firmly bound. Plate at p.25 loose and slotted in place. Pages bright and clean, only the odd spot.
