These 'Baedeker' handbooks, from the company of German publisher Karl Baedeker, set the standard for authoritative guidebooks for tourists. They contain, among other things, maps and information regarding routes, travel facilities, noteworthy sights, attractions and museums, written by specialists.
This is the first of three volumes dedicated to Italy, providing fifty-nine routes and excursions around Northern Italy as well as routes through Switzerland and Austria. With a chronological table of recent events.
With thirty maps and thirty-nine plans, including a folding map frontispiece and twelve folding plates. Collated, complete.
Condition
In the publisher's red cloth binding. Externally, with a 1.5" split to the cloth to the tail of the front joint, not affecting the firmness of the joint or hinge. Discolouration to the spine and minor shelf wear. Internally, binding to rear free endpapers is coming away slightly, with tape to the margin of the folding map, otherwise firmly bound. Pages are generally bright and clean, with contemporary ownership inscription to the front free endpaper and scattered spots to the first and last few pages, including to the folding maps. Endpapers are age toned.
