The first edition of Thomas Sturge Moore's play Absalom, a Chronicle Play in Three Acts, published by Sign of Unicorn in 1903.
In the publisher's original green cloth with antique laid paper. Contains original advertisements of fellow artists who have also been published by Sign of the Unicorn, including 'The Crier by Night' by Gordon Bottomley and art history book 'Giovanni Bellini' by Roger E. Fry.
John Sturge Moore retells the epic tragedy of Absalom and his revolt against his father, King David of Jerusalem, from the Hebrew bible. The play focuses on themes of family, betrayal and power.
An esteemed poet, having written the celebrated 'Vinedresser and Other Poems', Moore's flair for classical poetry is exhibited throughout the play's poetic dialogue. Moore fell in love with playwriting, and founded the Literary Theatre Club in London two years earlier.
Condition
In the publisher's original green cloth boards. Externally, very smart. Minimal signs of shelf wear, with minor bumping to board extremities, as well as head and tail of spine. Occasional handling marks. Minor offsetting to end papers, with odd spots to the extremities. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and generally clean with the occasional odd spot.
