A very scarce work.
A lovely novel exploring a year in the life of a garden, offering a riveting tale, as well as looking at which blooms each month, and what needs to be planted throughout the year, alongside anecdotes of life in the country and the community within the countryside. The author, Henrietta Mary Batson, wrote much about the countryside and rural people.
Illustrated with a frontispiece, eleven plates, and in-text illustrations. Collated, complete.
Illustrations are by F. Carruthers Gould and A. C. Gould.
Bookplate of Martin & Pamela Finch to the recto of the front endpaper. The Finch couple founded Matthew Finch Design Consultants Limited, a graphics group which specialised in design for print and publishing. They opened an antiquarian bookshop, Wadard Books, in 2001.
Forty pages of adverts to the rear, dated October 1902.
Condition
In the original publisher's cloth binding. Externally, generally smart. Tear to the front joint. Spine and extremities are faded. Light marks to the cloth, including a small ringmark to the front board. Minor bumping to the head and tail of the spine and to the extremities. Hinges are starting but firm. Bookplate to the recto of the front endpaper. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and generally clean with scattered spots. Small tidemark to the tail of the first few pages.
