Early Edition, Illustrated, Leather Binding, Prize Binding

The second reprint of the 1896 edition, in a full calf prize binding, with a gilt crest to the front board with the motto 'Esse Quam Videri'. Blind-stamping to the square, and marbling to the end papers and edges.

Ink inscription to the verso of the front free end paper, presenting the volume as a Fifth Form prize in 1909.

Originally published in 1857, this novel is set at Rugby School, a public school in the midlands that the author attended himself. The novel's protagonist is believed to be based on Thomas Hughes' brother George. Hughes's children's book greatly influenced the genre of British school novels in the nineteenth century. Illustrated throughout by Edmund J. Sullivan, with two folding colour maps to the rear.

Condition

In a full calf prize binding. Externally bright , though slightly faded to the spine. Light rubbing to the spine and extremities, with splitting to the leather to the head and tail of the front joint. Front hinge is slightly strained but remains firm. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean except for the occasional spot.
