What Our Customers Say...

Description

First Edition, Illustrated, Scarce

The first edition of this work in the publisher's original cloth binding with pictorial gilt to the front board and spine. All edges gilt.

Illustrated with a frontispiece, seventy-eight black and white plates and a folding colour map. Collated, complete.

Sir Donald Mackenzie Wallace (1841-1919) was a Scottish public servant, writer, editor and foreign correspondent of The Times.

In March 1901, the Duke of Cornwall and York (the future King George V) asked Wallace to act as his private secretary during an extensive world tour. From March to October 1901, the royal party visited Gibraltar, Malta, Aden, Ceylon, Australia, New Zealand, Straits Settlements, Natal and Cape Colony, and Canada. This resulting work offers an insight into the British Empire as it was in the early twentieth century, from the perspective of the British monarchy at the time.

This work is now scarce to find.

Condition

In the publisher's original cloth binding. Externally generally smart, with shelf wear to the boards, joints and extremities. Spine is slightly faded. Front hinge is starting but held firmly. Pages are bright and clean with the occasional spot, more so to the first couple of pages.
