Complete in seven volumes. Containing five first edition volumes, being volumes I, II, III, IV, and V. With volumes VI and VII being facsimile reprints of the first editions. A detailed and comprehensive history of The Peninsular War, fought in the Iberian Peninsula by Portugal, Spain and the United Kingdom against the invading and occupying forces of the First French Empire during the Napoleonic Wars between the years 1808 and 1814. Written by Sir Charles William Chadwick Oman, a British military historian noted for his pioneering reconstructions of medieval battles from the fragmentary and distorted accounts left by chroniclers. This set contains: Volume I - 1807-1809 from the Treaty of Fontainebleau to the Battle of Corunna, 1902. Illustrated with a frontispiece, two portrait plates, eight maps, six of which are folding, and a large folding map to the rear. Volume II - Jan-Sept 1809 from the Battle of Corunna to the End of the Talavera Campaign, 1903. Illustrated with a frontispiece, four plates, and nine folding maps. Volume III - Sept 1809-Dec 1810 Ocana, Cadiz, Bussaco, Torres, Vedras, 1908. Illustrated with a frontispiece, four plates, and fourteen folding maps. Volume IV - Dec 1810-Dec 1811 Massena's Retreat, Fuentes de Onoro, Albuera, Tarragona, 1911. Illustrated with a frontispiece, four plates, and eighteen folding maps. Volume V - Oct 1811-Aug 31st 1812 Valencia, Ciudad Rodrigo, Badajoz, Salamanca, Madrid, 1914. Illustrated with a frontispiece, four plates, and fourteen folding maps. Volume VI - September 1st 1812-August 5th 1813 The Siege of Burgos, the Retreat from Burgos, the Campaign of Vittoria, the Battles of the Pyrenees, 1980 (originally published 1922). Illustrated with a frontispiece, one plate, and eleven maps, ten of which are folding. Volume VII - August 1813-April 1814 The Capture of St. Sebastian, Wellington's Invasion of France, Battles of the Nivelle, the Nive, Orthez and Toulouse, 1980 (originally published 1930). Illustrated with a frontispiece and sixteen maps and plans, ten of which are folding. Collated complete.

Condition

In the original full cloth binding. Externally, smart with light rubbing and minor bumping to the extremities. Fading to the spines with the odd small mark to the boards. Small splits in the cloth to the head and tail of the spines. Hinges starting but firm to volume III. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright with the odd small spot. Light spotting to the first and last few pages with age toning to the endpapers. Previous owner's bookplate to the front pastedown.
