What Our Customers Say...

Description

Leather Binding

This collection of essays were first published in book form in 1823, and first printed in the World's Classics in April 1901, with this volume being reprinted in December 1901.

In quarter decorative green morocco, with marbled endpapers. Bound by Hatchards.

Lamb's essays began appearing in The London Magazine in 1820 until 1825. The personal and conversational tone charmed the readers, and were thus very popular among nineteenth century society.

Lamb himself is the 'Elia' of the collection, and his sister Mary is 'Cousin Bridget'. The author first used the pseudonym Elia for an essay on the South Sea House, for it was the last name of an Italian man who worked there with him decades earlier.

Lamb was friends with literary luminaries such as Samuel Taylor Coleridge, William Wordsworth, and William Hazlitt.
