Description

First Edition, Publishers' Original Binding, Uncommon

First edition. Volume I only, with a second volume published in 1904, continuing the work.

A study of Italian opera from the seventeenth century, including 'Die romische Oper der Jahre 1600-1647', 'Die musikalische Komödie des 17. Jahrhunderts - Opera Buffa' and 'Das Orchester der italienischen Oper im 17. Jahrhundert'.

One of the operas explored in this study is 'L'incoronazione di Poppea', the final opera of Italian composer Claudio Monteverdi. This opera is noted for being one of the first to use historical events and figures, describing how Poppaea, the mistress of Emperor Nero, achieves her goal of becoming empress.

This copy was owned by Edward Dent, an English critic and musicologist who was Professor of Music at the University of Cambridge. Dent provides his views on a performance of 'L'incoronazione di Poppea', in a letter taped to the front paste down, dated 1927. In addition, Dent has included the programme for this performance, as well as notes to the front endpapers and annotations to a number of the pages.

With many pencil notations, and stamps from C. Taphouse & Son music sellers to the title page.
