First edition thus, a new edition by David Patrick. In three volumes complete. Each volume is illustrated with portraits and facsimile and a frontispiece portrait to each volume, of Shakespeare, Samuel Johnson and Sit Walter Scott. The first volume carries the history down to near the end of the seventeenth century; the second is mainly devoted to the men and women of the eighteenth century and the third volume those great writers who begun their work in eighteenth century and brings the cyclopaedia up to the 'present time'. With a slip bound in to front of volume one listing some of the contributors to the present volume. Previous Sir Campbell Stuart G.C.M.G., K.B.E. bookplates to front free endpapers.
