The first edition of the work. With a frontispiece, seven further plates and a folding map of the region. Collated complete. Written by Eliza Suzanna Armstrong, the work details the Melanesian Mission, established in 1849 by Bishop George Augustus Selwyn, Bishop of New Zealand, to evangelise the islands of the southwestern Pacific. The mission is notable for its belief in training native clergy.

Condition

In the publisher's original blue cloth binding. Externally smart with rubbing to the joints and extremities. Hinges strained. Slight bumping to head and tail of spine. Internally firmly bound. Pages bright and clean. Prior owner's ink annotation to half title.
