The work provides historical insight into life in China in the nineteenth century, written as a series of letters and documenting the street scenes, politics, customs and general life. Freeman-Mitford was a British diplomat.

In the publisher's original cloth binding. A touch of shelf wear to back strip tail, otherwise externally exceptionally lovely. Inscription to front free endpaper. Significant spotting to endpapers and text block fore edge. Internally, firmly bound. Pages clean and bright.
