Born in India to an Anglo-Irish family, Roberts joined the East India Company Army and served as a young officer in the Indian Rebellion. During this time he was awarded the Victoria Cross for gallantry before being transferred to the the British Army where he fought in the Expedition to Abyssinia and the Second Anglo-Afghan War. Written by Field Marshal Frederick Sleigh Roberts, 1st Earl Roberts, a British Victorian era general who became one of the most successful British military commanders of his time.
Condition
Bound in full tree calf. Externally, sound with rubbing to the extremities and minor loss to the head and tail of the spine. Cracks to the joints. Hinges starting but firm. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright with the odd small spot. Light spotting to the endpapers with a contemporary ink inscription to the front blank.
