The original novel, The Ingenious Gentleman Don Quixote of La Mancha, is a Spanish work originally published in two parts in 1605 and 1615. It is considered to be a founding work of Western literature and the first modern novel.
In a hilarious parody of chivalry novels, the plot revolves around the adventures of a member of the lowest nobility, a hidalgo from La Mancha named Alonso Quijano. The character reads so many chivalric romances that he loses his mind and decides to become a knight-errant, under the name of Don Quixote de la Mancha.
The novel covers themes of freedom, loyalty, kindness, cruelty, friendship, insanity and common sense.
