Complete in four volumes. With introductions by Matthew Arnold (24 December 1822 – 15 April 1888), who was an English poet and cultural critic and worked as an inspector of schools. He was the son of Thomas Arnold, the famed headmaster of Rugby School, and brother to both Tom Arnold, literary professor, and William Delafield Arnold, novelist and colonial administrator. Volume I covers Early Poetry: Chaucer to Donne; Volume II covers Ben Jonson to Dryden; Volume III covers Addison to Blake; and Volume IIII covers Wordsworth to Tennyson. Each volume has an index detailing its contents. Humphry Ward (9 November 1845 – 6 May 1926) was an English author and journalist, and husband of best selling novelist Mrs Humphry Ward.
Condition
Four volumes in green cloth bindings with gilt title detailing to the spines. Externally, generally smart but lightly rubbed in places and some bumping; with slight damp staining to bottom of boards on Volume IIII. Internally, binding is generally firm but slightly strained in places. The pages are bright and clean with only scattered spotting and handling marks to the endpapers. All volumes have an institutional paper bookplate to front pastedown of Pencoyd. In Volume I there is an ink copperplate inscription on a piece of paper adhered to the front free endpaper.
