Decorative Binding, Early Edition, Illustrated

A set of three, each in the publisher's original green cloth binding with gilt detailing to the front cover and to the spine.

This set is comprised of the eighth and first illustrated edition of Penelope's English Experiences (1900), the ninth and first illustrated edition of Penelope's Experiences in Scotland (1900), and the eighth and first illustrated edition of Penelope's Irish Experiences (1902).

With illustrations throughout by English artist, Charles E. Brock.

These three works are presented as humorous travelogues written from the perspective of the fictional character Penelope Hamilton as she travels to Great Britain and Ireland. They were intended as novels for youth.

Charming gilt decorations to the front covers and spines, with clover leaves surrounding the Irish edition, and thistles and roses to 'England' and 'Scotland.' 

With a list of novels published by Gay and Bird advertised to the rear of each volume.

Condition

In the publisher's original green cloth binding with gilt detailing to front boards and spines. Externally, smart with shelf wear to joints and extremities. Bumping and loss to spine heads and tails. Internally, binding strained throughout to England and Scotland volumes, with front and rear hinges strained to both. Front hinge of Scotland almost loose. Binding firm in Irish vol. Pages clean and bright with marginal age toning and the odd tide mark to Scotland vol. Contemporary ink inscription to front endpaper of England and Scotland.
