George Eliot was the pseudonym used by English Victorian writer, Mary Ann Evans. She was best known for her realism, sense of place and detailed depiction of the countryside.
Throughout her career, Eliot presented the cases of social outsiders and small-town persecution, with political crisis often at the heart of her novels.
This presents itself in one of her best known novels, 'Middlemarch', a story following two sisters, Dorothea and Celia Brooke in a fictional midlands town.
As well as her works of fiction, this set contains her collection of poems as well as her thoughts on the philosopher Theophrastus and various other essays.
