A limited edition, being number 385 out of 750 copies printed at the Essex House private press. This is the third book to be printed by the Essex House private press. 

Collated from earlier editions by Janet E. Ashbee, and printed at the Press of the Guild of Handicraft Ltd., under the supervision of C. R. Ashbee. 

Illustrated with a wood engraved frontispiece by Reginald Savage, without the original tissue guard. 

'The Pilgrim's Progress' is a Christian allegory which has become one of the most significant works in English literature, being translated into over two-hundred languages, and never being out of print since its initial publication in 1678. It is second only to the Bible in popularity in Christian literature works.

John Bunyan was a Puritan preacher, as is best known for this work. He was jailed after the restoration of the monarchy as he refused to give up preaching him nonconformist ideas. He spent twelve years in jail during this stint, during which he begun work on 'Progress'.

Condition

In the publisher's original full vellum with yapp edges. Externally excellent with slight handling marks. Bookplate of a John Shelley to the front pastedown, with the odd spot to the endpapers. Internally firmly bound with bright and generally clean pages, with only the odd spot to the rear.
