The revised second edition of Captain Mahan's Life of Nelson, published by Sampson Low, Marston and Company in 1899.

In a morocco prize binding from Winchester College, with a frontispiece of the naval commander. Includes a preface to both the First Edition and the Second Edition. Contains all twelve illustrations and all 21 maps, including folding maps on leaves adjoining p.468, p.675 and p.742. Map of Italy and Corsica on leaf adjoining p.100 rather than 102. 

American naval officer and "the most important American strategist of the nineteenth century" according to the eminent John Keegan, Alfred Thayer Mahan's biography sets out to demonstrate why Nelson should be considered a naval hero in British history. Mahan's biography was significant for depicting Nelsonian strategy, which would inspire the Royal Navy's thinking into the First World War.  

The revised second edition considers contemporary criticism from the first edition, primarily his portrayal of Nelson's affair with Emma Hamilton, and Nelson's handling of the Neapolitan situation from 1798-99.
