First edition. Complete in two large folio volumes. In the original cloth binding. Undated, dated from copies held by Hathi Trust. This work explores the topography, geography, agriculture, inhabitants and other resources of islands acquired from Spain during the Spanish-American war, including Hawaii and the Philippines. Combining descriptive and statistic fact of the populations, customs, homes, landscapes and material resources. “Embracing perfect photographic and descriptive representations of the people and their islands lately acquired from Spain”. With an introduction by Major-General Joseph Wheeler, a military commander and Confederate politician. He was a general in the United States Army during both the Spanish-American and Philippine–American Wars. Edited and arranged by William S. Bryan.
Copiously illustrated throughout, including twenty-four colour plates, four full-page maps and numerous in-text monochrome images. Collated, complete.
Condition
In the original cloth binding. Externally, with rubbing to the extremities, resulting in losses to the cloth to the spine head and tail and to the board corners. Minor marks to the cloth. Hinges tender, as is usual with volumes this size. Internally, first few leaves of Volume I coming away. Otherwise, firmly bound. Pages are bright and generally clean, with only light toning and faint spotting to the first and last few pages.
