This is a scarce, first edition of the work, in the original decorative publisher's binding.
Dated using JISC from copies held at the British LIbrary and the University of Oxford Libraries. Charles Dudley Lampen was a British author who was mostly known for his works of children's fiction, notably his Lost World novels, such as this one. Similar to this work, Lampen's books were bound with a decorative design, with colour and gilt detailing, as would appeal to children.
This particular novel is part of Lampen's Lost World series. In Mirango The Man-Eater, the narrator meets a society of ancient Egyptians.
With vignettes and illustrations throughout, including a frontispiece by British artist and book illustrator Ernest Prater.
With thirty two pages of advertisements for other works from the Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge, to the rear of the novel.
With a prize-winner's bookplate to the front paste down, awarded to Leonard Kruger for Attendance and Progress, dated 1902. With a stamp for Willesden Boys' School to the front endpaper.
Condition
In the original publisher's decorative cloth binding. Externally, very smart, with light rubbing and bumping to the extremities. Offsetting and age toning to endpaper, with a prizewinner bookplate to the front paste down and a Boys' School stamp to front endpaper. Internally, firmly bound. Small crack between page 160-161. Pages bright and clean.
