The very scarce first edition of this work, containing the issues of the magazine published between January and June 1899. Illustrated with a colour frontispiece, five further colour plates by various artists, and a number of vignette illustrations, many of which are also by Rackham including the colour frontispiece entitled 'Up a Tree'. Collated, complete.
The issues in this volume contain a charming selection of short stories, poems, music and puzzles, as well as informative pieces on subjects such as wildlife and creative activities. Present are pieces including 'Little Miss Muffet', 'Shooting-Stars', 'Wellington's First Encounter with the French', and 'The Blue Well'.
Condition
In the publisher's original pictorial cloth binding. Bumping to back strip head and tail, with light fraying of cloth in these regions. Discolouration to back strip, with front board remaining bright. Tail of front hinge strained, but firmly held. Bookseller's stamp to front pastedown. Internally, firmly bound. Pages age toned due to paper type, with the odd spot and light handling mark.
