The publisher's Library Edition of this set, containing the works of American short-story writer, essayist and diplomat of the early 19th century, Washington Irving. 

Eighteen volumes. Missing Vol. I of 'The Life of George Washington'. 

Containing a pleasing variety of his short stories, histories, biographies and essays, including a posthumous publication, 'The Crayon Papers', comprising short stories under Irving's pseudonym Geoffrey Crayon. 

Uniformly bound in the publisher's green cloth, with red gilt-decorated spine labels. 

Illustrated with a frontispiece to each and a selection of further plates to some. Several leaves throughout the set are uncut.

This set comes from the library of Redfield Proctor Jr., an American business executive and politician who served as the 59th governor of Vermont from 1923 to 1925. The son of Redfield Proctor, a U. S. politician of the Republican Party and the 37th governor of Vermont. Proctor Jr was born in Proctor, a village named after his family in the town of Cavendish in Windsor County, Vermont. 

With his bookplate to the front pastedowns containing the Vermont governor motto 'Freedom and Unity'.

Condition

Uniformly bound in the publisher's green cloth. Externally, smart. With rubbing to the extremities and marks to the boards. Fading to the spine labels. Damp stains to the boards, heaviest instances to 'Mahomet II', 'Traveller', 'Alhambra' and 'Astoria'. Bookplate of Redfield Proctor to the front pastedowns. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are generally bright and clean, with tidemarks affecting the endpapers of 'Mahomet II'.
