A scarce later edition of William Clark Russell's biography on the naval icon. Published by G.P. Putnam's Sons, reprinted in 1899. The first book of the Heroes of the Nations series, edited by Evelyn Abbott. Collaborated with William H. Jacques.
In a full calf prize binding from Keswick school, with a colour frontispiece of Nelson's signal at Trafalgar. Contains all 33 illustrations, including folding facsimiles of Nelson's first letter as a peer and Lady Hamilton's attestation of it on leaf adjoining p.204. Collated complete.
Bound by Relfe Brothers with binder's stamp to recto of front free endpaper.
In his popular biography of the naval hero, Russell considers information which had yet to be confirmed since Southey's famous biography many years earlier. Like Nelson, Russell was introduced to life at sea from the young age of 13.
Best known for his nautical novels, Russell was very well-respected as a writer by contemporaries and this shines through in his biography.

In full calf prize binding. Externally, very smart. Slight rubbing to joints. Minor bumping to extremities. Slight handling marks and scratches. Marble end papers and fore-edge in excellent condition. Internally, firmly bound. Pages and plates are bright and clean.
