What Our Customers Say...

Description

Uncommon

Kingsley was a notable Church of England Priest, as well as a professor, historian and novelist. Often controversial, his works reflect a deep-seated distrust and distate of the Catholic Church (seen here particularly in the his novel Hypatia), an affinity for Christian Socialism hostility towards The Oxford Movement (shown here in Yeast) and a thorough knowledge and enjoyment of British history (reflected here in the historical novels Westward Ho! and Hereward the Wake). Despite his somewhat abrasive character and inflammatory views, his works were very popular during the Nienteenth Century. Here, the breadth of his work, his views and his own skills as a writer are exemplified throughout the set.

Condition

In decorative half-calf binding with gilt detailing and cloth covered boards. Externally quite smart, there are some markings to the boards as well as minor wear to the extremities, joints and backstrips. The backstrips are also somewhat faded. Internally, the pages are firmly bound and are bright and clean throughout, aside from some foxing to endpages and the odd spot.
