Description

Early Edition, Folding Maps, Illustrated, Leather Binding, Rebound

The second edition of this work by Fridtjof Nansen. Complete in two volumes, with half title.

Comprising the story of the incredible Fram expedition led by Dr Nansen from 1893 to 1896, in which he tried to reach the geographical North Pole by harnessing the north-east current of the Arctic Ocean.

Even though the mission was discouraged by other explorers, Nansen took the Fram with his companion Hjalmas Johansen to the eastern Arctic Ocean, and waited for the water to carry it towards the pole. After eighteen months, they both left the ship and carried on the expedition with a team of Samoyed dogs and sledges to reach the Pole.

Although they did not reach it, they did reach the Farthest North latitude of 86°13.6′N. The Fram finally emerged in the North Atlantic Ocean.

With a frontispiece to each volume, one coloured plate in facsimile from Nansen's own sketches, one hundred and ten full page plates in black and white, and various in text illustrations of etched portrait, photogravures. With a large coloured folding map to the rear of volume I. Collated, complete.

With an Appendix by Otto Sverdrup, Captain of the Fram.
