First edition. Following a smallpox epidemic that sweeps across England. Written as an attack on the anti-vaccination movement of the time. Written by Sir Henry Rider Haggard, an English writer of adventure fiction romances set in exotic locations and a pioneer of the lost world literary genre. With the standard swan and sailing ship brown endpapers. A misprint on p. 96, line 12, where the word "issue" has been printed as "issued" as cited in "A Bibliography of the Works of Sir Henry Rider Haggard 1859-1925" by J. E. Scott.
Condition
In the original brown cloth binding. Externally, smart with light bumping to the extremities and minor fading to the spine. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright with scattered spotting throughout. Contemporary ink inscription to the front endpaper dated 1899.
