This is a set of two volumes from a series of five. These volumes are first editions.

Volume number four comes with the very scarce, original unclipped dust wrapper.

Each volume is divided into four subjects: Architecture and Sculpture, Literature, Drawing, Painting and Engravings, and Music reflecting the ideals of aestheticism and arts movements. The volumes consist of the following:

Number Four. With architecture including "A Staircase", a drawing by Piranesi. Literature, including poems "To Baby" by Louis Barsac, "A Snowless Christmas", and "The Paralytic" by Laurence Binyon. Art, including "The Wave" by Hiroshige, "Fuji through the Rain" by Hokusai and a facsimile of a part of a Brush Drawing by Hokusai, and music, including "Cradle Song", "Love Alone will Stay" and "Wanted: An English Bayreuth". This volume comes with the publisher's original unclipped dust wrapper. This copy features 10 illustrated plates, including one plate in colour. 7 pages of sheet music to rear. Collated, complete.

Number Five. With architecture including "La Morgue", "Tour dite de Marat" and "The Paris of Meryon". Literature including poems "Au Coin du Feu" by F. Viele-Griffin, "In the Strand" by Laurence Binyon and "Children of the Dark Star" a story by Fiona Macleod. Art including "The White King" by Campbell Dodgson and "The Enchanted Sea" by H. A. Payne, and music including "Pensiero Elegiaco", and "Tears". This copy features 11 illustrated plates, including 2 in colour, with 3 pages of sheet music to rear. Collated, complete.

Condition

In the publisher's original paper wrapped boards. Slight rubbing to boards with one or two very slight handling marks. Slight rubbing and bumping to extremities. Slight offsetting to endpapers. Dust wrapper, a little worn. Two areas of loss to corners of front panel, the odd chip and closed tear to extremities. Age toned with one or two slight handling marks. Internally, firmly bound. Pages bright and clean with one or two spots, heavier to first and last few leaves and fore edge, more so to volume five.
