Volumes I to VI contain 'The History of England', Macaulay's best known work, detailing the history of England during the seven year period of 1685 to 1702, from the accession of James II to the death of William III. Macaulay's history is known for its brilliant prose and innovative style for the period.
Volumes VII to X contain 'Essays and Biographies'.
Volumes XI and XII contain 'Speeches, Poems, & Miscellaneous Writings'.
Thomas Babington Macaulay was a historian and Whig politician, serving as the Secretary War from 1839 to 1841. During his political career he played an important role in the determining of India's education policy.
Condition
In a half crushed morocco binding with cloth to the boards, bound by Bumpus. Externally, very smart. A few light marks to the boards, including small stains to the rear board of Volumes I and III, to the front board of Volume X. Spines are a touch faded. Head of the front board of Volume XII is faded. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean, with only a few scattered spots.
