What Our Customers Say...
Description
First Edition, Illustrated, Publishers' Original Binding
The first edition, first impression of this work.
The first issue, retaining the graphic frontispiece photogravure depicting the lynching of three African men, repressed in later editions.
Olive Schreiner wrote this powerful allegorical novella to expose the activities of Cecil Rhodes' British South African Company in what would become Rhodesia, and the typical behaviours of colonisers towards the indigenous population.
Following the story of coloniser Trooper Peter Halket, an Englishman who cares only for wealth and money, indifferent to others' suffering until some experiences lead him to think over the atrocities he committed, and face his own crimes.
A bitter satire by Olive Schreiner, South-African author and anti-war campaigner best known for her acclaimed novel The Story of an African Farm.
With half title, preliminary advertisement leaf, and twenty-four leaves of catalogue of works to the rear, dated 1897.
