This entertaining novel is set over forty years, following the quest of Jocelyn Pierston in search of his ideal woman. Pierston, a celebrated sculptor on the Isle of Slingers, becomes enamored by three generations of the Caro family, believing at different times that each one is his “Well Beloved”.
Illustrated with an etching frontispiece by H. Macbeth Raeburn, a portrait of Hardy and a map of Wessex.
Collated, complete.

Bound in the publisher's cloth. Externally, very good, with light bumping to the extremities. Light marks to cloth. Ink inscription to front paste down. Hinges are slightly strained, but holding generally firm. Lacking front free endpaper. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright with a few handling marks. Slight odour to book. Label remnants to half title.
