First edition. Uncommon work. Illustrated with thirteen plates. Collated, lacking the frontispiece and thirteen plates. A detailed history of the 1st Devon Militia, a part-time military force in the maritime county of Devonshire in the West of England, from their formal organisation as Trained Bands in 1558 to 1896. With reference to the War of American Independence, the French Revolutionary War and Napoleonic Wars, time served in Ireland in 1816, and the Militia Act of 1852, amongst other historical events. With a notice of the 2nd and North Devon Militia Regiments. Written by Colonel H. Walrond, of the 4th Battalion of the Devonshire Regiment.
Condition
Bound in quarter modern crushed morocco with cloth covered boards. Externally, very smart with minor wear to the extremities and light fading to the spine. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright with the odd small spot or handling mark. Light spotting and age toning to the first and last few pages. With library bookplates to the front pastedown and endpaper, and a barcode to the rear pastedown. Lacking thirteen plates, as well as pages 49/50 and 407-410.
