A set complete in two volumes of this extensive sporting encyclopaedia edited by the Earl of Suffolk and Berkshire, Hedley Peek, and G. G. Aflalo.
A nineteenth century reference work, which includes a vast selection of sports and related topics, such as the American Cup, taxidermy and veterinary work.
Adorned with numerous illustrations in text as well as some full page plates, featuring some beautiful designs by the notorious artist, A. Thornburn. Collated, complete with a frontispiece to each volume as well as an illustrated title page to volume I, and thirty eight full page plates.
From the library of Sir Philip Brocklehurst, known as a member of the Nimrod Expedition in Antarctica of 1907-09 led by Ernest Shackleton.
Condition
In the original publisher's full cloth binding with gilt to the edges. Externally smart with minor shelf wear only and a minor bumping to the head and tail of the spine and extremities, some darkening to the spine and general minor soiling to the boards. Some damp marking to the boards of volume II. With Sir Philip Brocklehurst's bookplate to the front pastedown of volume I and II, inscribed to the front free endpaper to volume I to Philip Brocklehurst from Little Ben [..] and Lofty Ben Lomond,' dated 1901. Internally, firmly bound. The pages are bright and clean, only the odd minor spot tot he odd leaf. Collated, complete with a frontispiece to each volume as well as an illustrated title page to volume I, and thirty eight full page plates. including numerous illustrations in text.
