Originally published in 1857, Tom Brown's School Days is set at Rugby School, a public school in the midlands that the author attended himself. The novel's protagonist is believed to be based on Thomas Hughes' brother George. Hughes' children's book greatly influenced the genre of British school novels in the nineteenth century.
Condition
In the publisher's original cloth, with handsome armorial gilt design to the front board and spine. Externally, very smart with bumping and shelf wear to extremities and spine head and tail. Handling marks to rear board. Front and rear paste downs torn at the hinge revealing cloth, binding unaffected. Loss to bottom right corners of approximately first third of leaves. Spotting and age toning, heaviest to first and last few pages.
