With a portrait frontispiece of the author, numerous illustrations throughout and a folding map to the rear of the book. Collated complete. The personal recollections of Charles Haynes Haswell, taken from his private journal. Providing a unique impression of everyday life in New York City during the nineteenth century. Charles Haynes Haswell was an American naval engineer, New York City politician and historian. He served as first Engineer-in-Chief of the United States Navy, and wrote one of the most successful engineering manuals of the nineteenth century. With one page of publisher's advertisements to the rear of the book. With cut-outs from a newspaper article advertising the book, dated 1896.
Condition
In the publisher's original cloth binding. Externally, smart with some shelf wear to the edges. Spine is darkened with spotting. Two small closed tears to the upper spine. Internally, firmly bound. Pages lightly age-toned but otherwise bright and clean. Small puncture to page xi. The odd spot throughout. Closed tear of about one inch to the left edge of the folding map. Offsetting to the frontispiece and title page.
